MICHIGAN GOP GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE CHIEF JAMES CRAIG OPPOSES
DETROIT CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL OF
$1 MILLION SETTLEMENT
TO DETROIT WILL BREATHE
PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release: July 27, 2022
DETROIT – I’m troubled by the recent news of the Detroit City Council unanimously approving a proposed $1 million settlement to Detroit Will Breathe stemming from the protests in 2020. As many recall, Detroit was the only major city in the country that did not burn.
Under my leadership as Detroit’s Chief of Police during the “summer of love” in 2020, the men and women in blue protected and defended the Motor City. They did not retreat like in cities of Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, St. Louis and others across the country leading to endless days of violent protests that included attacks on law enforcement officers, destruction of government buildings, property and looting of businesses.
On the occasions when our officers were attacked or violation of law was committed, we used only the force necessary to overcome violence perpetrated against officers. Our commitment throughout the 100 plus days of protests was to maintain order and safety in our city.
I have consistently been praiseworthy of city leadership for their support of our Department and our actions during the summer of 2020. I know many who reside and work in our city congratulated our successes.
It’s shameful that the Detroit City Council would entertain such a motion using taxpayer dollars to reward a group of criminals whose goal was to create turmoil. This is disgraceful to our brave men and women who put on the uniform and risk their own lives for the safety of our community. Our police officers deserve to be supported and clearly this is indicative of fostering support of law violators.
During my 8-year tenure as Chief of Police for Detroit, we instituted proactive policing methods and built quality community partnerships that aided in the reduction of crime.
Today’s residents and visitors to the city enjoy a safe community that has propelled economic growth, neighborhood redevelopment and increased tourism. The safety and vibrancy of Detroit is crucial to the health of Michigan’s economy.
As a Republican Gubernatorial write-in candidate for the August 2nd Michigan Primary Election, I promise as your next Governor to defend our law enforcement officers and maintain a safe, prosperous community for all.
